There are one new shooter in Olympus family. Here it comes Olympus PEN E-PL2, an update to the company’s popular Micro 4/3 series of interchangeable-lens camera. The E-PL2 features a 12.3 megapixel Live MOS image sensor with ISO setting up to 6.4k for better low-light shot without flash. It also has an updated design over its predecessor, with more rounded edges and black leatherette accents, as well as looks closer to its E-P1 and E-P2 cousins than the one E-PL1.

This camera come with great skin tones and a high definition LCD. With the 1.4 meg viewfinder, you have the complete package. Much better than the E-PL1 cause its screen allows you to evaluate if the picture is in focus, etc. And the skin tones are from Olympus so they are great, unlike the Panasonic inferior skin tones and jpegs, the Oly engine is great for jpegs. Pictures I took were hi ISO indoors with no flash and they came great. Also the E-PL2 is a handsome camera, whereas the E-PL1 was not. I liked the black model and the silver model the same. The new kit lens is compact. A real winner. Works great with the Panasonic 20mm lens.

It has been a while after Lumix LX3 was released so it’s nice to see the new addition to LX series, the DMC-LX5. Few compact cameras come as highly recommended as the Panasonic Lumix LX series and the LX5 continues their good name.

Definitely, the LX5 comes with several latest features that made this camera stand high among compact cameras photographers. It has reworked image processing engine and a longer range 3.8x optical zoom compared to 2.5x on the LX3.

Some technical specs

10.1-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality poster-size prints

3.8x F2.0 ultra-wide-angle 24mm Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens

3.0-inch Intelligent LCD; Record HD videos in AVCHD Lite; Creative Movie mode

Venus Engine FHD image processor; hot shoe for easy accessorization

Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

What so good

The image quality of this camera is excellent for a compact. The metering and auto white balance do a fine job of accurately reproducing the scene. The contrast and colors are excellent with nice saturation. Skies look better than some other Panasonics which tend to render the sky more cyan than blue, but the reds seem a little too strong (be careful not to blow the red channel). I can definitely see a difference between the LX5 and previous Panasonics and overall, I think the new Venus Engine FHD does a fine job.

The ergonomics of this camera are great. I never could get used to the small size of the Canon S90, it is too small and too slick; I always felt as if I could easily drop it. The LX5 is just slightly larger than the S90 and feels much better. I have no problems operating this camera with one hand. The buttons and menu system are well designed so you can get to the most commonly used settings quickly.

The lens is super sharp for a compact fixed lens and the extended zoom range compared to the LX3 is a nice improvement. Pictures taken with the LX5 are slightly sharper than the Canon G11 and much sharper than the Canon S90 and Samsung TL500. The lens is also wider and faster than other compacts.

Low light (high-ISO) performance has long been Panasonic’s Achilles heel. Pictures taken with an LX3 at ISO settings above 200 were very noisy. The LX5 is greatly improved in this area and I find ISO 800 to be very usable. Don’t expect the low-light performance to be as good as an APS-C or 4/3 camera, it is not even close, but considering the sensor size, the LX5 does a good job. I think the Canon compacts are still ahead in this area, but the difference is now very slight. The new intelligent-ISO feature is also an improvement; it considers both available light and subject movement when setting the ISO. I usually set ISO manually, but by setting the ISO limit to 800 and using intelligent-ISO I have found the camera sets the ISO just where I would want it.

Autofocus seems very accurate and I seldom get a blurry shot. The AF speed is typical of cameras in this class, but noticeably slower than my GF1. I had hoped the fast AF of the GF1 would make it into the LX5, but I presume this is a trade-off for a smaller, lighter camera.

The image stabilization feature works very well and is equal to the Canon compacts.

The camera ships with the latest version (3.1) of SilkyPix, which does an excellent job of raw file conversion. The camera is also supported in Adobe Camera Raw 6.2 for users of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Some cons

Manual Focus is difficult to use! The MF assist zoom releases within 1 second of changing the zoom while the camera is still shaking from the operation of the wheel or button. The zoom really needs to stay on longer (the GF1 stays on for about 10 seconds). I hope Panasonic releases a firmware update to fix this issue soon. I think 3-5 seconds would be ideal.

The AE-Lock indicator is only displayed with the normal display along with all other setting icons. AE-Lock only functions as lock-hold, so the status indicator is necessary. Users should have the option to disable lock-hold and the indicator should be displayed regardless of display mode.

The detachable lens cap seems unnecessary; I would prefer a built-in cap like most cameras in this class.

It is annoying that the only way to view a histogram in playback mode is to enable it in live-view mode. My personal preference is to not have it in the way while framing, but I occasionally check the histogram when reviewing a shot. A color histogram would also be nice in playback mode.

The buttons on the rear control pad are in different locations compared to my GF1 which has the ISO button on the top and the focus button on the left. The memory card orientation is also inconsistent between Panasonic models. These are not major issues, but I wish the designers hadn’t overlooked this. As long as I own both cameras, I will occasionally push the wrong button and insert the memory card backwards.

There is no remote trigger option.

Summary

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX5 is a worthy addition to the LX series. This is a pocketable compact that takes good quality pictures and marvelous HD videos. All these great feature however little bit pricey side for compact camera. Anyhow it is a complete package and impressive for a compact camera.

I got mine on Saturday from a camera store here in Austin. The camera is nice and small but feels very solid. I was interested in the EP1 but could never get my mind around the practice of viewing and focusing on the back LCD screen. I was interested in this product segment because I have a collection of the Pen F half frame film cameras that this one is based on. I was very happy to learn that several people are making adapters that will allow me to use those old Pen F lenses on the EP2. I am looking forward to using two of my old favorites, the 60mm f1.5 and the 70mm f2.

I took the EP2 and the kit zoom lens out for a three hour spin yesterday morning. It was 30 degrees outside and the first thing I discovered is that this is not a camera with an interface you can use with gloves on. The buttons are too small and require too much pressure with gloves.

In daylight I didn’t notice any real problem with focusing. It was not as slow as I was led to believe. BUT, it does do this little “focus on either side of sharp” and then lock and shoot that takes a few tenths of a second each time you autofocus. The cure is to switch the focus on control to the fn button or the ael button and then you can focus once and shoot until the subject/camera distance changes. It’s definitely not bad. I also tried a bunch of low light focusing later in the evening and, with 60 watt household lights in various fixtures the focus locked pretty well.

You would be unwise to buy this camera without the EVF (electronic viewfinder). In my opinion this is what makes this camera and cameras like the Panasonic GF1 special. It’s a great finder. Almost as clear and clean as a great optical finder. Better than the optical finders on the Olympus e300 and e520 cameras that I also own.

Here’s why I really love the camera. I spent years and years shooting with a Hasselblad and I love composing images as squares. Several DSLR’s with “LIve View” are available that can be configured to shoot different aspect ratios in Jpeg. Including the square. But when shooting portraits those cameras go through too much time consuming labor to use it effectively and the effect can only be seen on the rear LCD screen. On the EP2 this is not the case. The exposure is relatively instantaneous. And the camera can be used in a square format which you can view through the EVF.. You basically wind up with a 6×6 camera that shoots 9 megapixel files (the crop of the 12 megapixel sensor to square) at three frames per second.

The color and sharpness, even with the kit lens, is superb. Out of camera jpegs are something Olympus is famous for and this camera is even better than it’s predecessors. I’ve also processed a few raw files with Capture One 5.01 and they are great but not that much better than a well exposed Jpeg.

At the end of the first paragraph is a link to a gallery of images. The image at the top of the blog is full size. Click on it to see just how sharp the files are.

The only unhappy note I have about the camera is that the BLS battery was “only” good for around 300 images. I always buy a spare battery when I buy a new camera so I had one in my pocket when the first battery became depleted. Keep in mind that it never got about 35degrees (f) while I was shooting and cold really messes with batteries. I presume you might be able to hit the 500 shot mark with warmer weather.

Finally, I am excited to shoot HD video with this camera. With adapters I’ll be able to use some of the great lenses I’ve bought for my regular Olympus cameras.

Here is my con list:

1. The batteries could last longer….

2. The EVF plugs into a port under the hot shoe. It also takes over the hotshoe. This means that you can’t use the hot shoe or even trigger a flash if the EVF is plugged in. This is a big deal. I wish the camera had a little pc terminal somewhere. Then I could use the EVF and still be able to trigger studio flashes.

3. Same thing for microphones. If you want to use an outboard mic for recording sound you’ll need to use the same connection port. So you get to choose between EVF and microphone.

4. I wish there were more dedicated Olympus lenses for this format. I’d love a 20 or 25mm prime lens with a fast aperture. I think that would be sooooo cool. Maybe that’s down the road.

All in all this is the camera I’ve wanted for a while. I am happy with it. It gets only four stars because of the multi-function port. On image quality it’s five star. If they drop in price after the launch I will try to buy a second body. Have fun deciding between this and the Panasonic GF-1.

TZ10 is a compact ultra-zoom camera featuring an optically stabilised 25-300mm equivalent Leica lens, manual exposure control and built-in GPS. The TZ10 and its brother the TZ8 – also announced today – are the first cameras in the Panasonic TZ series to offer full manual exposure control.

The TZ10 is also the first Panasonic ultra-zoom to feature a built-in GPS unit. The location data where the photo was taken is automatically embedded with its latitude and longitude in the EXIF data. These geo-tagged images can be pinpointed on the maps of social media internet maps to be shared with the world. Plus, the TZ10 also shows the name of the town, area and landmarks using an internal database to give users real-time information of the place when taking photos.

The Panasonic TZ10 has a 14.5-megapixel CCD and shoots at up to 12.1-megapixel resolution. This enables multi-aspect shooting in any of three aspect ratios – 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 – while maintaining the diagonal angle of view.

In addition to taking stills, the camera can also record 720p HD movies in Motion JPEG or AVCHD Lite format, and you can fully utilise the powerful 12x optical zoom in while filming. The TZ10 also features Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high-quality audio.

SDXC card support and a 3”, 460000-dot Intelligent LCD with anti-reflex coating round off the features list. The Panasonic TZ10 will be available from mid March in a choice of silver, black, red or blue.

If you have exported geotagged pictures from iPhoto to a Mac, you would have noticed that the GPS coordinates are not included in the exported image. There is an easy fix to ensure that the coordinates ride along in the file.

Geotagging – which embed longitude, latitude and any other location data into a picture file – is great fro remembering where you went on vacation. But it can also cause privacy concerns, say, by letting everyone know where you live when you send around pictures of your fancy new television. The option to include the location data in pictures you export from iPhoto 09, select the photos and choose Export from the file menu.

In the include section of the File Export Box, check the box next to Location Information to embed the coordinates in the image

This is a new product from Panasonic Lumix family. Feel free to read some description of this brand new superzoom camera from Panasonic below.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 features AVCHD Lite, High Definition (HD) video recording capability, combined with a powerful 27mm wide-angle, 18x optical zoom Leica DC lens. A successor to the popular FZ28, the FZ35 packs enhanced creative features combined with the power to shoot HD videos, including motion zoom capabilities to take full advantage of the 18x zoom. The operational layout of the FZ35 includes a dedicated video record button, making it a true hybrid–a single model that performs seamlessly at capturing both still and motion images–while still providing smooth and easy operation in either mode.

For users looking for increased creativity while shooting both video and still images, the Lumix FZ35 delivers. New manual controls and creative options, include:

Creative Movie Mode: Allows the user to set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subjects. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances.

My Color Mode: This special option gives free reign to the user’s creativity. The color, brightness and saturation parameters can be freely adjusted while seeing how the adjustments affect the picture, live on the monitor.

High Dynamic Mode: Helps to capture a scene with moderate exposure even though the scene may contain both bright and dark areas.

The 12.1-megapixel-FZ35 features the upgraded POWER Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.), which allows for double the repression power compared to the conventional image stabilization system, MEGA O.I.S., and ultra high-speed Auto Focus (AF) for capturing action scenes as they happen. Additionally, with the super-powerful 18x optical zoom lens, it is easy to capture subjects that are far away or take dramatic close-ups.

With the enhanced energy-efficient image processing LSI–the Venus Engine HD–the FZ35 has an extended battery life of approximately 470 pictures, making it the ideal choice for active photo enthusiasts. As with all Panasonic Lumix cameras, the FZ35 features Intelligent Auto (iA) Mode, a suite of intuitive technologies including Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and Face Recognition. With the improved Face Recognition, the FZ35 recognizes up to three faces simultaneously while taking photos and allows users to specify the age of the registered subject. When babies under 3 years-old are registered, the camera will automatically switch to Baby mode if the baby appears to be in the frame.

AVCHD Lite–Beautiful HD movies, extended shooting time
The FZ35 records HD movies with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. It uses the AVCHD Lite format (MPEG-4/H.264) to achieve higher image quality while storing less data than the conventional Motion JPEG. Plus, the FZ35 is equipped with an HDMI output terminal for direct transmission of digital image and sound signals. Just connect the camera to an HDTV using a single HDMI mini cable (optional) for fast and easy slideshow enjoyment.

Wide-angle 27mm Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens and 18x optical zoom The bright F2.8 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens ranges from 27mm wide-angle all the way to 486mm telephoto. Combined with the double* corrective power of the improved Power O.I.S., this makes it possible to capture subjects clearly without hand-shaking, even in the telephoto range.
*Panasonic comparison

Creative Movie mode
You can adjust the aperture and shutter speed any way you like. This mode gives you a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore in your movie making.

Zoom-in movie
You can zoom in and out while shooting movies.

Stereo mic
This camera features Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator, which records dynamic, true-to-life audio to bring out the power of your HD images.

IA mode (Movie)
You can also use iA mode to shoot movies, and let the camera do all the work for you.

High-speed response for truly intuitive shooting
Enjoy high-speed 1.2-second start-ups, AF speeds of approximately 0.3 second, and up to five consecutive shots at 2.3 frames per second with full resolution. You can also take up to 470 photos with a single battery charge (CIPA). This comfortable level of performance lets you capture even the most fleeting shutter chances.

My Color mode puts you in control of the color
In this mode, you can freely adjust the color, brightness and saturation parameters. This makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images. Adjust the settings that best suit the shooting conditions and your expressive intent, and then enjoy your own photography.

PROs: Ease of use, picture quality, zoom and extra zoom, HD movie, lightweight, stop action. BEST Point and Shoot I’ve ever owned ! ! !

CONs: (all minor) No eyepiece boot for EVF, lens cap interferes with zoom, tripod mount interferes with battery/memory door when in use. Only 10 sec. max on the built in timer.
