Disappointment for Google Phone

According to a report released by market analytic company Flurry, Google’s Nexus One smartphone has been a commercial flop compared to initial sales of the first generation iPhone and Motorola Droid handsets.

During the first 74 days on the market Apple sold one million first generation iPhones. Motorola Droid sales were even more impressive with 1.05 million units shipped during the 74 days after its initial launch (making it fastest selling Android phone ever launched).

In comparison, Nexus One sales estimates are sitting at a miserable 135k.

Nexus One could be a flop?

“Despite the fact that the Google Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date, and enjoyed substantial buzz leading up to its release, the launch has been overshadowed by lower than expected sales,” said Flurry’s vice president of marketing Peter Farago in a blog post.

Online Dictionary by Google

Google the company that for many has come to define the Internet, has quietly rolled out an online dictionary offering the meanings of words in more than two dozen languages.

A visit to a Google Dictionary service at google.com/dictionary shows a clean, simple webpage with a box for selecting languages from a drop-down list and a second box for typing in words to be defined.

I search the video demo from You Tube but I cannot find one. Anyway Google Dictionary is simple, and you can use it with ease. The dictionary service offered definitions of words in 28 languages and to translate terms for or into English. Cool and it is really helpful.

Is Google’s Mobile Future Golden?

Google’s proposed $750 million acquisition of AdMob looks at first glance like a move sure to extend its online ad dominance to the mobile realm. But Google isn’t the first major Internet player to gobble up a mobile ad network to gain an early advantage in the space. In 2007, AOL bought Third Screen Media and Microsoft acquired European-based mobile ad company Screen Tonic.

As with Google’s bid for AdMob, analysts hailed the Third Screen purchase as a validation of mobile marketing efforts. But neither the Third Screen or Screen Tonic deals have made AOL or Microsoft the giants of mobile advertising. In the case of Third Screen, the departures of key executives including founder and CEO Tom Burgess following the acquisition probably didn’t help the company sustain momentum.

“You have to find a way of keeping key personnel at these companies or finding people who are roughly as capable,” noted Roger Entner, senior vice president and head of research and insights for the telecom practice at the Nielsen Company. “AOL bought Third Screen Media and everyone left.”

Both Google and AdMob have assured that won’ t happen following the closing of their deal. “Attracting the world’s top engineering talent and people with entrepreneurial vision to Google has always been crucial to our success,” said Vic Gundotra, Vice President of Engineering at Google.

And for his part, AdMob founder and CEO Omar Hamoui in a blog post yesterday wrote: “The best part of all this is what’s next. We are not going away.” Time will bear out whether he keeps that promise.

Entner said he expects the Google-AdMob deal more of the big traditional Web companies to pursue mobile acquisitions to keep pace. But he stressed that simply snapping up a promising mobile startup doesn’t guarantee success. “You have to execute very well,” he said. “[Mobile] is a vibrant, ongoing engagement, so you have to keep working at it.”

Google Has Acquired Gizmo5

Last month Skype was in talks to acquire VoIP startup Gizmo5. It was a perfect backup plan in case all that IP litigation didn’t work out. Gizmo5′s SIP infrastructure could theoretically replace Skype’s proprietary P2P back end.

After the Skype settlement, though, Gizmo5′s strategic value to Skype sort of plummeted. In the meantime, Google bought them, say multiple sources with knowledge of the deal, for around $30 million in cash. The deal is done, say our sources, and will be announced shortly.

Gizmo5 is a good fit with a number of Google products. Google Talk allows voice calls between users but has no PSTN link to allow incoming or outbound calls to real phones. Gizmo5 does this well already.

And Google Voice is a great VoIP and phone identity service, but they have no endpoint for calls. Gizmo5, which by the way already integrates with Google Voice, is a soft phone end point for Google phone users. In other words, you will be able to make and receive calls to your Google Voice phone number from your computer.

This looks to me like Gizmo5 will be the glue that puts Google Voice and Google Talk together into a single product. And that product looks a lot like a Skype competitor.

Gizmo5, which was founded in April 2003, has raised $6 million to date, plus an unspecified amount from founder/CEO Michael Robertson. Prior to Gizmo5, Robertson gained notoriety with his founding of MP3.com and later MP3tunes (which has led to big music suing both the company and himself personally).
