Virus and malware attacks against organisations have increased because of employees using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media in the workplace, according to top global study.

Of the 4,640 organisations surveyed by the Ponemon Institute, a research firm, more than half said these computer attacks grew as a result of workers  using social networks.

About a wuarter of those respondents said the attacks rose by more 50%.

As social media services play a bigger role in businesses, many organisations find themselves ill-equipped to handle the accompanying security risks, according to the report.

Researchers surveyed information-technology employees at organisations in the United States, India, Brazil, Germany and elsewhere, and found that only 35% had a policy on using those social media at work. Of those 35% enforce it.

“A lot of organisations still didn’t have an acceptable policy,” said Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Traverse City, Michigan-based firm.

For those with social-media rules in place,”a policy that isn’t vigorously enforced isn’t meaningful, ” he said.

The virus and malware attacks use a simple approach to attract victims, according to security company Websense, which sponsored the survey.

“Most attacks are socially engineered driven,” said Patrick Runald, a researcher at San Diego-based Websense.

User may be enticed to click on a video, for example, “which takes you to a page off of Facebook, where they trick you into downloading something.” – Bloomberg

The Motorola Droid Bionic will arrive on September 8th according to multiple reports, indirectly confirmed by the teaser released by Verizon Wireless in YouTube and advertised in both TV and in print. The Motorola Droid Bionic is the wireless carrier’s first dual-core Long Term Evolution Android smartphone, so it is quite possible that the device will attract a lot of customers, especially the die-hard Android fans.

Apparently, Verizon Wireless will not offer the Samsung Galaxy S II, possibly because the device doesn’t support Long Term Evolution, and Samsung’s LTE Galaxy S II variant is still not available in the market.

Sprint Nextel, the third largest wireless carrier in United States, secured the earliest Galaxy S2 release date on September 16, with the rebranded Samsung Galaxy S II “Epic 4G Touch.” Aside from the tweaked name, the Sprint Galaxy S II also sports “better” display of 4.5-inches, which is 0.2 larger than the original Samsung Galaxy S II released outside of United States, and AT&T’s variant with the same brand name and form factor. According to Sprint Nextel, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will sport the tag price of $199.99 with 2-year contract agreement, which could be cheaper than the Motorola Droid Bionic.

Rumors say the first Motorola LTE phone will sport an asking price of around $250 to $300, with some third-party retailers expected to offer the phone slightly cheaper than the Verizon Wireless asking price. Both the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Droid Bionic are considered as the top high-end Android devices that will compete against Apple’s rumored iPhone 5, the device that could include iOS 5 out of the box, and with dual-core processor and better forward facing camera.

The latest rumor about the iPhone 5 is suggesting that the device will also join Sprint’s smartphone lineup, with Best Buy also expecting the variant for the Now Network to hit stores alongside Apple’s original partner, AT&T and its new partner, Verizon Wireless.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg is reporting that Deutsche Telekom a wireless carrier in Germany, has started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5, ahead of the anticipated release date announcement. Rumors say Apple will announce the iPhone 5 this month, and the United States will get the first release date in October, followed by other markets.
